We will hold a prayer walk and bear witness before some of the foreclosed homes and buildings around downtown San Jose.

CHAM is a Christian Ministry that fervently believes in the Gospel message of justice for the poor. God commands us as a society to use the abundance he has given us to lovingly care for all our people, especially those most in need. This is the good news to the poor that Jesus announces at the start of his ministry.

God is moving us today to "proclaim liberty throughout the land," just as our revolutionary ancestors did in 1776. The vacant and unused homes of our city should be made available to the poor and homeless. But this is not just about the poor. On a deeper level, it is about saving the soul of America. A country that stands by and allows its people to be plundered by corporate greed is, in Dr. King's words, approaching spiritual death.

It does not have to be this way. We as a people and as a society can repent. We can stop coddling the super-rich, as Warren Buffet said. We can redeem unused bank-owned properties from all the hoarders, speculators, document forgers, and usurers - and put them in the hands of people who need them for basic shelter and necessities.

Throughout October and November, CHAM is planning a series of prayer walks, vigils, and teach-ins. In faith we openly call on Almighty God to get involved in our people's increasingly desperate battle to survive. Over 43,500 homes will have been foreclosed in San Jose alone from 2008-2012.

JOIN US! WE WELCOME PEOPLE OF GOOD WILL FROM ALL FAITHS AND BACKGROUNDS TO PARTICIPATE.

"If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." - 2 Chronicles 14.

California Day of Prayer and Action for the Poor and Homeless

CHAM Deliverance Ministry in San Jose is calling for a statewide California Day of Prayer and Action for the Poor and Homeless, to be held on Saturday, March 19, 2011.

Latest updates can be found on this initiative's Facebook page

We call for prayer because we face a profound moral and spiritual crisis in our state. Unemployment and destitution are spreading, even in the midst of the most fabulous expansion of corporate wealth and productivity in history. As Martin Luther King used to say, a true revolution of values looks uneasily on the glaring contrast of poverty and wealth.

We have practiced the appearances and features of religion and democracy, but we have neglected the more important matters justice, mercy, and faithfulness. Our government is gradually abandoning its sacred constitutional responsibility to promote the general welfare of the people, and too many of our churches are silent.

We call for action because we are instructed to be doers of the word and not just hearers. We dare not call ourselves a moral nation if we do not do what is right and follow God's commandment to love our neighbor. California has among the highest unemployment, home foreclosure, and homelessness rates in the entire nation.

On March 19, we call on people to gather in prayer in the spirit of repentance and transformation. We call on God to have mercy on us and save us from the destruction that awaits those who fail to address the situation of the poor.

After prayer, we will march to the centers and symbols of worldly power in our areas: the offices and buildings of elected officials, councilmembers, and legislators. Like Ezekiel's watchmen, let us call on them also to repent from their wicked policies, and pursue justice for the poor, before it is too late.

We urge you to organize a March 19 Day of Prayer and Action in your city also, or else join us as we gather here in San Jose, where the poverty rate has recently increased to 9% here in one of the wealthiest cities in California and in all America.

Come, you who are blessed by my father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.

LETTERS TO OBAMA

While today's economic crisis is devastating to America's poor and working people, it is also an opportunity. Now is the time to fight for systemic solutions that meet our most urgent needs and reflect our most fundamental values. CHAM Deliverance Ministry and the Affordable Housing Network, in San Jose, California, have launched a "Letters to Obama" campaign to urge the President to take bold action to solve America's historic housing problem.

Ongoing Internet campaign - visit Blog

http://www.ktvu.com/video/25915333/index.html

Activists for the homeless took to the streets in San Jose Tuesday night, handing out free blankets to help those forced to stay outdoors during the current stretch of cold weather -- Lloyd LaCuesta reports

KTVU video report - See video

SAN JOSE: Cold Weather Triggers Early Opening For Homeless Shelters

Cold weather has prompted a Santa Clara County homeless services provider to open two emergency shelters early this year for those in the South Bay who need a warm place to sleep -- Robert Handa reports

KTVU video report - See video

Ministry starts homelessness awareness campaign

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A San Jose ministry is announcing a campaign today to raise awareness about the plight of Santa Clara County's homeless population.

Last year, 66 people died from homelessness, and so far this year, 44 homeless people have died, according to CHAM Deliverance Ministry's pastor Scott Wagers.

"This is one of our most tragic social problems," Wagers said. "One that doesn't get enough attention because of the nature of it, because it's depressing to some people."

ABC (South Bay News) 11-24-2010 - read full article

Memorial Service for the Homeless who Have Died on the Streets of Silicon Valley

On Sunday, October 24, CHAM Deliverance Ministry will hold a memorial service to honor the area's homeless who have fallen due to poverty and neglect.
